Giving Due Respect

Now that's its official that Ronald Steele won't be running the show at Bama this season I think this opens the door for our floor general Jamont Gordon to get his due respect. Mr. Steele has been a media darling the last two seasons and Jamont plays pg for us b/c he is the best for that position and not out of necessity like most national publications are reporting. No one can hold a candle to Jamont in the conference much less in the nation when it comes to his all around game. I'm glad it will be coming and I know opposing coaches won't be able to sleep the week they match up with MSU thinking of the nightmarish match up problems Jamont will cause. Most have heard me say this before, we as a fanbase need to enjoy Jamont, we may never see another PG with his size and talent adorn the maroon and white again.
Ezekiel 18:9 He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD.

Its amazing to watch the progress he has made in the last two years and especially the second half of last season. As I have said before, it is in MSU’s best interest for the long term that Jamont and the team do well this year and he gets drafted in the first round of the NBA draft. Jamont actually played in the power forward slot at Oak Hill and came into MSU with the reputation of being a scorer. However, Coach Stansbury has said from the beginning that point guard was his best position.

If Jamont gets drafted in the first round after leading the team to at least another SEC West (or better) championship then it will lend a lot of credibility to be used with other players when telling them where on the floor they need to play.

On another note, I finally got to see some footage on Dee Bost and he looks amazing. He is very quick and a tough guy. From what I’ve heard and now seen he will be a great point for us that should push Ben Hansborough.

Finally, Delwin Graham, the 2008 PF from GA, committed to LSU.

If by slim chance Jamont stays 4 years, he'll have a chance to break almost every record in the books with the numbers he put up his first 2 seasons. He's a cool cat too - had a class with him when he was a freshman.

Imagine Gordon, Jarvis, Hopson, Osby... with matured veterans Hansborogh and Stewart, plus a stacked bench. Man if Jamont stays when that 08' class comes to town things could get ugly for anyone that has to play us.

According to the new team roster, Jamont Gordon listed is at 6-4/230 for the 2007-2008 season. Rhodes 6-8/245, Varnado 6-9/210

Jamont is a great talent, but also a great team player, he has always had the talent, but his overall game has come " a million miles" at Mississippi State!

With regard to DeMarquis Bost, I always like a basketball player that has played football, too. I think it gives them an advantage in mental toughness!

By the way, I imagine most people know this, but Dee Bost was named the North Carolina High School Athletics Association male athlete of the year for 2007!

with so much depth on this roster and further rosters, finding playing time will be a great challenge for Stansbury. My concern would be just as last year when we had teams put away we'll go to Iupe or Billy for playing time. I know the crowd wants to see Iupe but there were times when Stans could have come in with Goodridge, Rimmer, the twins could have played more. Giving that same situation this year do we leave Phil, Elgin, Kodi, or some other players on the bench to see Iupe or Billy. So when the season is over we'll have the same situation as before. Not enough playing time for the "true" reserves. I know I have always enjoyed seeing Iupe and Billy come in the game but I feel when that happens those players that could be on the floor will take the same road the Delks did.

My recollection is different.I thought Stans played his reserves early and just put Iupe and Begley in maybe for the last minute or two of the game.

But I also think the idea of developing "special teams" in basketball is an interesting idea.It is a way to get more players more playing time.

And in addition, Dean Smith used to occasionally substitute " 5 for 5". There are ways to get more guys on the floor. One of the best ways, however, may still be just having someone keep up with minutes, and having an idea of how many minutes you want to give each player per game.It becomes sort of a "time management" problem. It is a problem that can be solved with some thought and attention.
