Player Progression Series Part 9 - Newcomer - Ravern Johnson

Ravern Johnson Known coming out of high school as a shooter, at 6’7” and 175 pounds, he will have to work at getting his weight up and get much, much stronger to compete at this level. He also needs to work on his ball handling skills. But he is still a great shooter. He can knock down the 3 and hit the 2 off of the dribble. His pull up jumper is a thing of beauty. He is a player that is if crowded will go around you take the ball to the basket faster than you think. His most pressing needs are to develop his strength, work on his defensive game and gain some weight. The best attribute he brings to the team is his shooting ability.

I've been following Ravern's HS career for the last two seasons and I am about excited as I've been about an incoming freshman in a while. It might take a while for Rav to a adjust to SEC competition, but when he has the ball in his hands he will have the green light from the coaches to let it fly. - Arliss

I believe Ravern can give us situational help due to his incredible shooting ability. However, I think his lack of ballhandling and defense will limit his effectiveness this year. I could see him coming in at the 3 but not either of the primary ballhandler spots.

i have yet to get to see him in action, but if he is even half the shooter than most of our fans say he is, itll be great to see him wearin maroon.

his height, length, and outside shooting ability coupled with the fact that we are lacking at the '3', makes me think that he could have some meaningful minutes there this year. assuming his D is solid enough. he and Kodi, assuming their defense comes along well, could split much of the time at the '3'.
man, having that sort of size and athleticism at the 3, 4, and 5 spots is exciting!

I'm hoping he is a 6-6 Timmy, someone that is ready with the dagger. Oops I forgot we already have Barry, well we will just have to find out who has the real killer instinct. Sounds like a job for Bully 001.

I will never forget Timmy at the SEC tourney when we beat bama. He hit that deep three falling out of bounds in front of our bench, talking smack back down the floor and giving a tiger woods fist pump.
He hit so many big shots, no wonder he was the biggest winner at state, what a player.

I remember a recruiting article from last summer when Ravern played a tournament in Bud Walton, Fayetteville. I think he hit 6-8 threes and people in the stands were doing the Reggie, Reggie, Reggie chant. Reggie Miller.

Once he gets stronger he's going to be a good one. Of course there are a lot of wirey wing players in the history of basketball that have out performed thier bird like proportions. ZD.

Reggie Miller, he was kinda of clutch! What a good comparison.

Thoroughly enjoying this. Thanks Arliss. I know these youngsters are yet to be proven in SEC competition, but, I can't help but get excited about our depth and potential. I saw a preseason Top 25 on ESPN that had us at 17. One of the sites commented on how efficient Jamont became in the last 7 or 8 games, and especially in tournament play.

And when you take into effect the way that Barry and Ben came on toward the end, this promises to be a very fun year!

They'll all be playin' with a bit of swagger and something to prove. I saw a quote from Rick in response to a question concerning his expectations for the coming season. It went something like this:

"As usual, we'll be concentrating on winning Championships!"

You've got to love that!

These Progression Series would not be possible without my insider 001. I hope all are enjoying. I starting looking at the schedule and the numbers are starting to come together.
