Freshmen and Their Minutes

Turner, Phil 7-0 97 13.9 7-28 .250 2.71
Benock, Riley 6-0 50 8.3 5-12 .417 2.54
Bailey, Elgin 6-0 37 6.2 5-9 .556 1.8
Augustus, Kodi4-0 21 5.3 0-3 0.81
Johnson, Ravern4-0 16 4.0 1-6 0.5

Minutes 1st and points 2nd in bold.

Some of these numbers are troubling, the question is if these players are give the minutes will the production increase? For the life of me I don't know why Ravern has only made one shot this season. I remember Timmy Bowers had issues his freshmen year, but 1 shot through 6 games. The next time we are in a shooting slump, put Ravern in and let him shoot, he is a natural shooter and eventually start knocking them down. If these freshmen are given more minutes will they produce and what is keeping them on the bench? We will need them, the window for the learning curve before the SEC is starting to get smaller. Everyone is the SEC is having some stumbles along the way but SEC will be here in the blink of an eye. One of these guy will need to step up, so who will it be, Rav, Kodi, Riley, we'll see. Go Dawgs!!!!

i agree, its tough hearing that the bench needs to develop, and yet the bench gets little PT.
just doesnt seem to make sense.

ive liked seeing Bailey in there for the few times he has gotten significant PT due to foul trouble from one of the 3 main big men. Bailey has played tough and with a lot of energy. he hasnt switched off a man or two on defense, but its not for lack of trying. ill take messing up while still hustling any time over messing up from doing nothing.

Varnado clearly has no offensive game. and his defense relies totally on shot blocking. i firmly believe that he could play 7 less minutes, and that time could go to Bailey and Augustus.
and in these pre-con games when the competition isnt all that great, take 5 minutes from Rhodes and give that to Bailey and Augustus too.
let em play some significant minutes during meaningful parts of the game(not just end of the half/end of the game PT).

the same could be done for Jamont, Ben, and Barry. take each out for 3 more minutes than normal, and let Ravern and Riley split 9 more minutes of PT than they usually would get.

i dont know, maybe this wouldnt make a difference. who knows. but its pretty clear that the current way isnt getting the desired results.

Jarvis has tons of offensive game, he just doesn't shoot enough. His field goal percentage led our team last year.

Do you ever watch other Coaches and thier "court side manner?" Coaches like Pearl, Donovan, Kennedy, and Kevin Stallings who stalk the side-line and bark orders ?

Rick doesn't have the voice to coach like that and he has to be more of a "huddle coach."

I think he's very uncomfortable with having players on the floor that he has to constantly manage. If life were perfect he'd always have a 2004 (Timmy, Shane, Winsome, Lawrence, etc ) team that might could have won games with the staff reading newspapers.

When I've watched them, the FR look as though they are 100% stage fright. Like they're thinking through every decision rather than just playing basketball. Especially Augustus. ZD

--what good does a high fg% do if the player takes so few shots?
he does not shoot well outside of 10 feet. and i have yet to see him drive to the basket from the elbow while looking like he is under control.

he really isnt part of the offense. it isnt run thru him. his points come off putbacks and the rare made freethrow.

you are correct, he doesnt shoot enough. im not sure if that is because he isnt reliable for anything more than putbacks, or if it is because the offense is just horrible in every way.
