Full Court Press 12/5/07

The ball is in your court, what do you want to talk about?
I have a topic to start off. I believe the bench will develop and we will find that spark plug off the bench. Who do you think it will be? I'm still holding out for Ravern. - Arliss

1 Thessalonians 3:7 Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.

Ravern is very capable. He's still adjusting. Has won State Championships. Ravern has won both Mr. Basketball and Mississippi Player of the year. Ravern put up big numbers in the Mississippi, Alabama All Star Classic win. The Alabama team had guys like Rico Picket and Justin Knox, and Ravern scored 23 points against this talented All Star team. He also put up big numbers in AAU. Ravern can flat score, needs playing time. Stansbury has indicated himself that Ravern is for real. The light will eventually come. on.

the light can probably come on, but they are not getting the playing time needed to develop. yeah, we had a few tough games all close together, so the freshmen couldnt play much(if at all) because they are a liability in those games.
but then we have a week off to practice, and play Murray State, and they STILL dont play much!?!?
all this comes after Stans says, "We still need to find some help off that bench. In tight games that we've been in the last two games, it's hard to find someone on the bench and try to get them out there."

WELL STANS, WE PLAYED MURRAY STATE!! WHAT BETTER OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE THE BENCH MEANINGFUL AND SIGNIFICANT MINUTES!!
Bailey played 8 minutes.
Turner played 11 minutes.
Augustus had only 4 minutes. are you kidding me??
Benock played 9 minutes.
Ravern played only 5 minutes. again, are you kidding me??

not exactly the sort of significant and meaningful playing time needed to develop the bench.

im not suggesting these guys play 30min/game. but come on. Augustus had 4 minutes? Ravern had 5? seriously. that is the exact opposite of what Stans says he wanted to do. and its not like the other bench guys played much either.

i exclude Brian Johnson from this list because he is, in my opinion, experienced and talented enough to start. the only reason he is on the bench is because 6 players cant be on the court at once.

Ravern has played against other top recruits in the past, and has looked impressive. Ravern put on a show in a win against the Alabama All Stars/Alabama freshmen. Has the talent. Play him, and he'll eventually adjust.

I think our biggest problem is lack of contribution from the bench (excluding Brian) and i too was a little puzzled at the fact that some of those guys didn't get more time against Murray State.

One thing to consider though...
Our starters are still learning how to play together with 2 bigs. We have been playing small for 2 years. Combine this with the fact that we need CONSISTANT contribution from Ben and Barry EVERY game (because no help is coming from the bench) and I can understand giving most of the minutes to the starters regardless of the opponent.

I know guys like Phil, Ravern, and Riley need minutes, but we also need to continue the development of the chemistry with our Starting line-up because those are the guys that we are really going to depend on.

Don't get me wrong I would have loved to have seen Ravern with 10-15 min against Murray, but (1) he has to earn it in practice and (2) Our starters need minutes together as well...especially after a tough time on the road.

All that being said and even though SE La is a average-to-good team, I hope the game presents itself in a manner that allows us to give some of our bench guys some meaningful minutes.

Phil and Ravern are the 2 that I would like to see step up, mainly because they have the best combination of skill and athletisicm. Unfortunately both have played really poor at times.
On another note I would really like to see Jarvis look for his shot aroung the goal more...specifically by crashing the offensive boards.

RCD- i agree, its tough to balance bench development with starter's development.

im really not sure about Ravern though.
