Game Statistics

Stats from the game:
http://www.mstateathletics.com/fls/16800/stats/mbk/200708/ms1208.htm?DB_OEM_ID=16800

I like the increase in minutes for Riley, Elgin, and Kodi. Might have been a different game without Jamont. It might just be me, but I feel like we are heading in the right direction. - Arliss

21 turnovers to go with only 10 assists. Anyone see the game? How many of those turnovers came off charges and out of control desperation passes? Just curious.

Jamont will not score 25 points per game in SEC play. As a result, we will find it very hard to win when turning it over at twice the rate at which we tally assists.

Not realizing the game was on CSS I kept up with it on the internet until half time. I'm not sure how many fouls in the first half were offensive but don't remember a one in the second half. I know these guys weren't a major hurdle but we did shoot better than 50% against them when they have help opponents to 38% so far this year. I saw positives from the changes stans made and I feel the chemistry will come.

TO's were spread around. Per usual, Sir Charles led the way with 5 and Jamont with 3. the rest were 2 and 1. When our big men realize they can't dribble the length of the court with the ball, our TO's will go down.
I don't believe we had a single charge in the game last nite. In fact there was only one, on SELA, the entire game.

LONG!!

Rhodes gave a solid 30 minutes. 7-8 from the field, a perfect 2-2 from the line, and 7 boards. 16 points 7 rebounds, ill take that every time. also, Rhodes swatted 1 away and came up with 3 steals!
he did have 5 turnovers though, and also fouled out of the game.
solid performance, but still had a couple of obvious troubles.

Gordon put up 25 tonight on almost 50% shooting. he hit a 3, and was 80% from the line. bringing down 7 rebounds with 3 being offensive was good to see. all very good offensive stats.
he had 4 assists, but also 3 turnovers. he just isnt a distribute first PG, and that is fine. but he does need to be a PG that doesnt turn the ball over. and with a 1-1 A/TO ratio on the year with 29 turnovers, he simply isnt valuing the ball enough. he is averaging over 3.5TO/game.

Hansbrough had a solid game with 10 points on 4-7 shooting. he hit a 3, hit a ft, and brought down a few rebounds too. collected 2 turnovers though.

Stewart didnt shoot well, going 2-6 from the floor, and 2-5 from behind the arc. he finished with 6 points, 1 rebound, and 2 steals.
at least he kept his A/TO ratio even for the day. not a great outing by Stewart.

Varnado fouled out yet again...shocker. before he managed to take himself out of the game though, he got 8 points and swatted 4 shots away. but only collected 3 rebounds.
he tied his season high for points...which further solidifies the fact that he simply isnt an offensive threat. and he didnt sniff his rebounding average. toss in the fact that he had 2 turnovers for the game, and overall, this wasnt really a great day for Jarvis.

Brian Johnson got in for a whopping 2 minutes. way to go on that team meeting thing. i hope whatever made him late was worth it. he did manage to put up a basket in that time.

Turner looked like the low recruited redshirt freshman that he is. i still cant believe that Stans has said on more than one occasion that it was a tough decision to redshirt him over Stewart.
in 12 minutes of play, he managed to miss a couple shots from behind the arc as well as one from the line. he finished the day with 1 point and 1 steal...and 1 turnover.
for the season, Turner is averaging over 13 minutes per game. in that time, he has managed to make just 23% of his shots. 23% from behind the arc too. 33% from the line though.
i really cant believe that he is getting twice the PT as Augustus and three times the playing time as Ravern.

Bailey got some significant PT due to Brian Johnson's incident. 14 minutes played. in that time, he scored 2 points and pulled down 4 boards. he had a steal too. he didnt hit either of his FT attempts though.
Stans had this to say about Bailey after the game, "I felt Elgin did not hurt us any tonight and added to our play more than usual."

Benock also got a good amount of PT. he certainly has been a suprise. going from message board black sheep when signing to actually playing meaningful minutes as a freshman. the kid is smart and can play! who knew those things could both exist?!?!
seriously, he had an ok game. poor shooting, 1-4 on the day, but he hit a 3, collected 4 rebounds, had an assist, and got a steal too. and the best part...0 turnovers!!

Augustus actually got to play today! he logged 11 minutes and went 3-5 from the field and 2-2 from behind the arc! add in the fact that he had 6 rebounds, and i was very impressed.
8 points and 6 rebounds in 11 minutes? that is stellar from a freshman who hasnt gotten any sort of meaningful minutes. he did manage to turn the ball over twice.
Stansbury said this about him after the game, "Kodi [Augustus] got to stay in the game long enough and get in a fl ow and step up and hit some shots. It was good to let him get some points on the board.”
yeah Coach, it was nice. it was very nice. we should try it more often.

Ravern Johnson once again got the short end of the stick. he played 6 minutes. in that time, he missed a 3pt shot, made 1 free throw, and got an assist and a turnover.

as a team, we shot 52.5% from the field. 38.9% from behind the arc. and 68.4% from the line. as a whole, not too bad. not bad at all.
the team's A/TO ratio was disgusting though. 10/21?!?! that is horrible. this will hurt them many time over when we play good teams(it already has).
6 blocks on the day keeps up an average that is just unreal. its an impressive stat, for sure.
MSU outrebounded them by 15, and limited SEL to 7 offensive rebounds for the game. apparently that was a point of emphasis according to Stans and Rhodes, so good job there.

glfr,

I was just looking at the stats and noticed Kodi's numbers. Wow!

Hey Stans, Kodi can play.

Echoing the glfr's commentary on Stan's post game quote concerning Kodi's play,

"yeah Coach, it was nice. it was very nice. we should try it more often."

I commented about Kodi's play in the game and the desire to see him get more minutes over on Gregg Ellis' blog. He responded by reminding me that they were "ill-advised shots." Ill-advised or not, 2 for 2 aint bad. Anyone else see the "ill-advised shots." I'd like to hear your thoughts.

In fact here's the link to the post on Gregg's blog if you want to go over and respond there:
