The 3 Spot

I got to thinking the other day about one of the biggest changes in our team this upcoming year. The 3 spot could make or break this team for the upcoming year. Wikapedia defines the 3 spot as: "the three, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. 3's are typically somewhat shorter, quicker, and leaner than power forwards and centers, but on occasion are just as tall. The 3 position is considered to be perhaps the most versatile of the main five basketball positions, due to the nature of its role. Most current NBA 3's are between 6'5" and 6'11" in height. Defense is often a major priority for small forwards, who are often counted on using their athleticism and size as defensive advantages."With the mixture of the lineup last season, I don't think anybody could tell you who was playing what position all of the time. One thing is for sure, we won't have a shortage of candidates to play the 3 this season. Let's see, we have Ravern, Barry, Phil, Kodi(even though his size will likely push him to play the 4), and Benock. If you look at the description of the 3 it seems like Kodi could be a canidate if he can defend. The 3 has to have the ability to shoot the 3 and defend out on the perimeter. I think Scotty Hopson could be the perfect 3, but we are still a year away from that happening. Jamont will be the leader at the 1 but the 3 could decide some games this season. So, according to the description, the 3 should be the 3rd best rebounder, shoot the 3 well and defend the perimeter. What is needed the most for this team, well when it comes to rebounding we need some help in the post, we can always use a 3 pt shooter and last, defense on the perimeter. I think we have shooters and rebounders so if you can play defense on the perimeter, you will play. Now, who will contribute, your guess it as good as mine, Rick will be tinkering with the lineup most likely until the SEC tips off. You can bet whoever does get those minutes will have an impact on the outcome of the ballgame. -Arliss

Augustus would seem to be the man for the 3 spot. Lets see how the season progresses. I think you'll end up seeing Hansbrough playing back up to Jamont on the Point, and Stewart/Rav at the 2.

But, we've got to have a big year from Jarvis the "V"-man (roman numeral V) Varnado! If the "V"-man steps up big at the "V"-spot, then we are in for some "V"ery good things this year.

Both, Ravern Johnson and Kodi Augustus are exccellent candidates at the 3. Also, Barry Stewart is expected to play a lot on the perimeter/wing. Phil Turner.

Defense at the 3 is a key. Outstanding group of atheletes, with lots defensive potential.

I believe that Augustus could tie down the Small Forward spot by mid-season. He might not start, but I believe he will see considerable minutes as Varnado and Rhodes hold down the 5/4 positions respectively.

From the early reports, Kodi might be our deadliest outside shooter and he has the ability to go around defenders in getting to the basket.

In small lineups, he will play the 4 of course.

I haven't anything that would suggest Agustus is quick enough to guard on the perimeter. However, I think he would be a great 4.

Augustus is a very large guy. I met the freshmen group (including walk-ons) yesterday, and got a nice feel for them.

Augustus is a goofy, tall and thin guy. Nice attitude.

Elgin is REALLY thick. Think just barely less than Big Baby Davis thick. Very hard to understand verbally.

Ravern is pencil-thin, but very toned. Tiny head, and tall.

Riley is almost like a taller, thinner version of Hansbrough. Quite thin, actually.

Bolen reminds me so much of Brandon Boler (sp?) it's scary. Face, hair, everything. He's a built guy, great personality.

Thought you guys would find this interesting.

Bailey is a big/thick kid. He's solidly built. He's a load in the post. At the 3 spot you have the.......... Ravern Johnson Camp(Ravern is the man), and The Kodi Augustus Camp(Kodi is the man),Also the Barry Stewart Camp(Barry is the man). All 3 of these guys bring things to the table, and Mississippi State will be looking for these kids to defend regardless what position they play, and they will.
