Player Progression Series Part 7 - The Rest of the Best Phil Turner

Phil Turner He will play guard and due to his versatility could play either the 1, 2 or 3 slots. He handles the ball really well, he can shoot, and can mix it up with the bigger players. He can take the ball from the floor to the rim in a heartbeat. He passes off of the dribble really well. He played well during the summer and if carries those abilities over into the fall season, he will be a pleasant surprise to many. He needs to work really hard on his defensive game. To do this, he has to improve his strength and aggressiveness. The single biggest attribute he brings to the team is his versatility.

I'm personally looking for Phil to be as big of a surprise as Barry was last season and should nothing but solidify our depth even more in the back court. - Arliss

i really hope we arent using him at the 3 this year.
to add on that, i really hope we arent using stewart at the 3 either this year.
and Ben being at the 3 isnt horrible, but i dont want to see him there much each game.

we finally have some height at the 3 this year. it is young height, but our other options really arent all that much more experienced. Augustus is the same age as the sophmores. Ravern is thin and untested, but if he develops any sort of defense, he needs to be in there at the 3 as well.

last year, we got blown up and very exposed at the 3. Dizzy played with energy and passion, but he was often times just overpowered by the bigger man he was defending. having someone that is long, lanky, and not too built means we have height without sacrificing slowness. it creates a mismatch on both ends of the court.

Very good point, we will need size at the 3 to compete for the West title.

Heard yesterday that Turner is rounding out very well. His speed sets him apart from Hansbrough and Stewart and don't be suprised if he carves away signifigant playing time in support of Gordon, Barry, AND Ben. Sounds like he is expected to be a valuable utility player on the perimeter. ZD

I thought P Turner looked good last year in the scrimmages and the Labor Day trip. We know he is a decent shooter but I have been more impressed with how active he is on the boards. For us to be a really good team this year he has to be able to come in a give us “starter” type numbers.

Do you think he'll move into a starting role as the year progresses?

I like Barry and Ben, but, I like to win first.

I don't see Phil moving into a starting role unless we suffer a major injury, but he could be the first option off the bench. His ability to play defense and FT shooting will dictate that more than anything I feel.

Turner helps add speed and atheleticism to Mississippi State's perimeter rotation.

Kodi Augustus' development may also be a key for the team at the 3 spot.

I know that we have a bunch of Freshmen and newcomers, but, man it seels like we are deeper than we were last year. No doubt, we're better. But, assuming that our youngsters are as talented as we think they are... we are going to be deeper than we were last year.

Turner, Johnson, Augustus, Ravern, and Bailey... can we possibly have a 9 man rotation? Any redshirt candidates among the 3 rookies?

Tom, we will be deeper at the 4/5 positions but we lost a little depth on the perimeter w/ Slater and the Delks gone.

Based on what I've heard Turner will be a valuable reserve on the perimeter. Jamont will play more minutes than any other player so we should be all right. ZD

Both, Kodi Augustus(listed at 6-9) and Ravern Johnson(listed at 6-6/6-7) are set to be key factors at the 3. Ravern also played at the 1 and 2, ect., during high school. Helped where his team needed him. These kids are tall and very atheletic. They both have big upsides on defense. Very good shooters. They just need some coaching, playing time, ect. Augustus is also expected to be in the mix at power forward. Back to Phil Turner........ According to reports, this kid is set to help out/play at any of the perimeter positions.

Don't stop me now!
We played Louie and Bouie back in the day, a colossal match up. They beat us in the final four.
The similarities are eerie, the truth is greater than your imagination. Are the stars aligned. Do we hoist the claret jug,the sears tower, the boot, somebody help me, as our Orange kindred spirits.

The depth and balance of State's squad this season is impressive.
