Player Progression Series Part 5 - Jarvis Varnado

Jarvis Varnado Has picked up where he left off last year. He is stronger and has gained about 15 pounds of muscle. He will play center and post area this year. His offensive ability has improved since last year. You’ll see him scoring more this year I feel. We already know about his shot blocking capabilities. He has great timing for this roll and I think will continue to be a great shot blocker this year. He will also see more playing time this year, especially if he can stay out of foul trouble. One of his weaknesses at this time is his strength and he is working hard to overcome that. But his biggest weakness is his free throw shooting. That high arcing shot with no spin won’t get it done. And playing underneath, he should be able to get his share of free throw attempts.

You got that right about the FT. I was thinking about the Delks leaving the other day and I kinda wished they'd taken Jarvis' FT shooting with them.

I remember him making consecutive FT's several times and just wondering how they went in. The technique was just so bad it seems like he should just start over.... perhaps a granny shot. lol.

He's going to be a very good player overall though, he's got very long arms and he gets off the floor in a heartbeat. One of the quickest big guys in the SEC. ZD

Very few people understand how much potential Varnado has. His FG% was almost 10% better than anyone else's on the team last season, and he has joined the Top 10 blockers of all time at MSU in his FRESHMAN season. This kid is going to be an amazing player as soon as he learns how not to foul.

Jarvis is an amazing talent and I will be surprised if we can keep him all 4 years. However, he is concentrating too much on blocking shots and not enough on denying the ball into the post. Regardless I think he is an underrated player.

If you look at his points compared to his minutes, no doubt about he was the most efficient player we had and he showed flashes of an offensive game.

that arching free throw somehow went in at a better % than reggie delk's. how? i have no idea. but it wasnt very pretty.

last year, Reggie Delk, Richard Delk, Varnado, and Goodridge were by far the worst 4 free throwers ive seen in a long while for us.

i know they work on free throws, but wouldnt the coaches sit there and work with him on his setup and technique? i realize that really cant be done during the season due to time constraints, but the offseason as well as the practice before the first game should allow plenty of time to work with him on that release.

V-man has got to be a huge player for us this year if we want to do better than 2nd or 3rd in the SEC West. We need him to step up big. He needs to be our starting center with Rhodes at the 4.

Keep putting on the muscle son, we're going to need you to play like a giant!
