Secret Agent Bulldog 001 Reports

Coach Stansbury is on a recruiting / baby-sitting trip. Coach Kirby and Cunningham are also on the same mission. They will all be on the road until the end of the month. After a quiet week (when recruits can't be contacted), all of the above coaches hit the road last Saturday because it's open season until the end of July. Then we go into another quiet period from August 1 until September 9. So I would speculate that each of our 3 recruits have a baby sitter whereever they may be playing. Also, these same coaches can evaluate rising HS Juniors for future consideration. In conjunction with the above, it seems that UNC has developed an interest in Dee Bost. And we have already heard the rumors about KY being interested in Scotty Hopkins. I feel our coaches can hold on, but as we all know, in the recruiting game, anything can happen. If we can hold the commitments of our 3 until August 1, then we'll have time on our side. Other coaches should only be able to approach them from September 9 until October 5. From October 5 on is only evaluations. Then we have the early signing period for a week during the middle of November. I'll feel more comfortable when we have LOIs in house, but even more so when I see then attend their first day of classes as MSU. I can't remember any kid that signed an LOI with us and met all qualifications that didn't play for us, except those that went from HS to the NBA. So, I remain cautiously optimistic that we eventually see Hopson, Bost and Osby suit up in the Maroon and White.

Wow, we have 3 stellar recruits that we have to continue recruiting. This has to be the part of the job that really wears on a Coach of the wrong disposition.

Hopson is probably the biggest concern. During these open periods Gillespie and staff can (I guess) try and persuade him to take a visit to Lexington and give the new staff a look. It will be difficult for Scotty to turn down that wine/dine experience and I wonder how we advise him ? I get the picture that Kentucky is recruiting nationally and probably don't give Scotty the same attention that we do but it also seems like they could focus on him during these contact periods. Good that we are on top of the situation as you explain here.

I may need to be corrected, but I believe that Dee Bost can't recieve communication from UNC once he gets into Military School, or at the very least the communication is filtered differently from the normal prep school experience. Maybe we just have the remainder of summer to worry about him.

The good news is that there is an established relationship and relationships surrounding these guys and the interloping recruiters are scrambling to climb the ladder relationally.

It'll be a happy day when the letters reach the Bryan Building. ZD

That is interesting about contact while in Prep School. I haven't heard that before. I would feel better if he didn't visit anyone at all. I'll won't relax until we have his LOI in hand. I'll have to ask 001 about contact while in prep school. As alawys, appreciate your insight on recruiting Zombie

Dee is not at Hargrave yet. He doesn't start school there until the fall term. And by that time the open period will be over. Our biggest worry is between now and August 1.

id like to think that Hopson decided to commit to us for a couple of reasons. and those reasons are advantages that UK just cant match.

the first reason is the obvious AAU connection to Varnado and Stewart.
the second is the relationship that Stans and Co has created with him and his family. there is no way to makeup the time that has already been put in and i think that Billy the Clyde will never be able to make up the time that MSU has put into watching and courting Hopson.
the third, and in my opinion one of the most important, is that Hopson will have a great chance to play immediately. at UK, they will already have a deep lineup at the SG/SF position. but come next year, we will be able to move the lineup around to accomodate him and some immediate playing time for him.

***'08 players in no order***
PG- Bost, Hansbrough, Turner, Stewart
SG- Stewart, Hansbrough, Ravern, HOPSON, Benock
SF- Augustus, Osby, HOPSON
PF- B. Johnson, Varnado, Bailey, Osby, Augustus
C- B. Johnson, Varnado

because we have recruited players that are flexible and able to slide over and play a different position each time they enter the game, we will have room for Hopson(and Osby for that matter, perhaps him even moreso) to contribute immediately.

it is great to know that we have a team that has the ability to show many differnet faces.

I think in the end we get Scotty, Rick hasn't let us down yet. I personally think that Scotty could be "instant offense" at MSU. He could be a one and done, but I see it taking at least 2 years to see what he can do. The experts have him as a 2 guard with serious NBA potentail. He could be one of the most exciting players to ever put on a MSU jersey.

Scotty will be stepping into a great situation with B Johnson, J Varnado, Hansborough and Stewart as the probable other starters. With his leaping ability I can see him playing the 3 position in college.

Scotty and Dee will be starters at Mississippi STate from Day 1.

No other school could offer that.

Gillipie could SAY it, but it would be a lie.

I've heard he tells EVERY recruit that they are the "Number 1 recruit" and that they'll all start as Freshmen.

That means Kentucky will have 13 starters!

What a joke!
