Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 2/9 @ Auburn & Wednesday 2/27 @ Hump

The Tigers have had the talent, have the talent, but just haven't seemed to put it together. When it come to basketball at Auburn, most of the headlines from last season came from the announcement of the plans to build a 92.5 million dollar arena. The frontcourt took a hit as recently as Monday with the announcement that Josh Dollard (AU leading scorer and rebounder) will not be playing this season due to medical reasons. Auburn will now depend heavily on 7'1" 265 lb newcomer Boubacar Sylla and Tyrell Lynch. Lebo's options and strength will now lie in the backcourt with Robertson and Reed. The tigers outlook for the season is not starting off on a good note and they will need some new faces to step up and fill the voids.

Saturday’s Open Scrimmage – The Rest of the Story by 001

By now you have read the posts on the internet sites and Arliss’s columns about the scrimmage. You can even go to the mstateathletics.com web site for a write up and the game statistics. What I would like to convey to you are the things you had to be at the game to see in person and a few things that have never been reported. First, the team is in great condition. They proved this by the up tempo play which consisted of two 20 minute periods, a one minute overtime in the second and then finally the 12 minute period. You could tell they were getting tired in the 12 minute period, but they ran the entire game. Defense has shown improvement between the closed scrimmage and the open scrimmage. We, and I think this is because of how well they are conditioned made it through the 2 a day practices without injuries. I feel that we now have at least 3, possibly 4 men that can come in off the bench and be productive. Our starters being Gordon, Stewart, Hansbrough, Rhodes and Varnado. And coming off the bench being Turner, B. Johnson, Bailey and Augustus, Turner and Augustus being the first 2. Phil Turner plays with speed and intensity and toughness. In fact one of the things no one knows is that after Friday practice, Phil and Jamont were fooling around one on one and ended up banging heads. Phil had a small knot on his head and Jamont has 4 stitches above his eye. So, yeah, Phil can be tough. The most pleasant surprise was the way Kodi ran the floor and was verbal and set great picks for Jamont and the other guards. A little more experience at rebounding and defense and he’ll see playing time. Phil has a smooth 3 point shot and it tells in the statistics as he went 7 for 9. Elgin has come a long way since the closed scrimmage also. He is starting to play at the level we expected him to play at. The most telling thing in this scrimmage was the constant movement of both the players and the ball. It was some of the best passing I have seem us do in several years. No one was standing around with the ball and players were constantly moving to try and get open. And finally, Brian Johnson. He played OK, but I thought his knee was giving him problems because he tended to favor it and at times was actually limping some. Rest assured it is not his knee. I was in the basketball office this morning and talked with several of the coaches. Seems right at the beginning of the scrimmage someone knee’d Brian in the thigh and gave him a tremendous bruise. That was what caused his non-stellar performance. Now I will throw in a few interesting statistics. We went 25 of 57 on 3 pointers, 76 of 167 overall, 72 or 97 on free throws, 39 assists, 38 turnovers, 9 blocks and 14 steals. Can’t wait until we start playing some one else instead of each other. With what I observed Saturday, we will we should be able to run our oppositions legs out from under them this year. ‘GO DAWGS!!’ -001

Another Look at the Open Scrimmage

After having a day to digest the results from the scrimmage and what we know up to this point, I like to take a look at a couple of things and players. I'll be the first to say that you can't read into the scrimmage too much but players are starting to stand out. Jamont Gordon has all the traits to be a statistical wonder this year. It might take a mathematician this season to keep up with Jamont is doing this year. Jamont has said that the NBA next season is not a given, but I have a hard time believing that his stats won't be grabbing the attention of NBA scouts. Jamont's jumper has improved enough to keep the defense honest. Opposing defenses will have to pick their poison when defending Jamont this season. After watching Jamont for going on 3 seasons now, size and speed play a big factor in Jamont's drive to the hoop, but the biggest thing Jamont has going for him is momentum. Most of the time Jamont knows whether he is going to drive it to the hoop before he crosses half court. With a head of steam, he is unstoppable. Jamont is even better at drawing fouls. Look for the free throw attempts he put up in the scrimmage to be the norm as the season progresses. 18 of 21 from the charity stripe are amazing numbers and I look for Jamont to make this a habit.

I'm been thinking about Barry and his progress from this year to last. I don't see Barry putting up 22 pts night in and night out, but I do see Barry making the plays on defense and making that shot when we need it. Jamont and others could be racking up the points, but look for Barry to have the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I feel confident in Barry running the team if his services are needed.

I like how much quicker Ben is getting his shot off on the perimeter. Ben will be very stingy on defense and he is very aggressive taking it to the hoop. Ben has learned to shoot off the dribble more and his hustle will make a difference.

Phil's name was mentioned last season, yet Phil was forced to sit back and wait for his turn. As of now Phil should spell Jamont at the point. You really have to see Phil's play in person to get a grasp for just what kind of player he is going to be for us. If Phil learns to be a shut down defender, the sky is the limit. I see him having some offensive outbursts this year, but we might not see Phil's total package this season because MSU has some much firepower overall as a team. I look for Phil to be the first option off the bench and can see Phil contributing 10-12 pts a games this season with some 20+ games mixed in there.

The last month or so the hype has been building for Kodi Augustus. From what I saw yesterday, it is validated. Look for Kodi to be the spark plug off the bench this year. He has a soft touch on his shot and is showing he can rebound the ball and drive it to the hoop. When Kodi learns to rebound the ball well and shoot the ball in between 0 & 20 feet, he will be capable of changing a game's outcome. If you want to get a preview of MSU commit Romero Osby, pay attention to Kodi, he posses several of Romero's skills that make him such a highly sought after recruit.

I was very pleased to see Elgin playing well yesterday. I like his play directly under the basket and there will not be many players in the post he can't body up. When Elgin learns how to use his body and learn how to block out, he will be a player for us. As long as his continues to make progress he should play a part in our post depth this season.

If you looked at minutes vs. efficiency last season you knew Jarvis could be player this season. Jarvis has shown can step out 10 feet from the basket, but he is learning the way of the offensive rebound. He will get alot of points off misses and will rule the offensive boards. Bailey did give him fits at times with position in the post, but I look for Jarvis to put up some numbers if he can stay out of foul trouble. The biggest surprise has got to be his free throw shooting. By the looks of Jarvis will be ruling the post, cleaning up on our misses and swatting shots.

Riley Benock seemed alittle gun shy yesterday and was guarded by Ben a good portion of the game, but until Riley develops his all around game, he can make a difference this season. If teams leave him open on the 3 point line, they will pay.

I feel like Ravern will contribute this season but I look for his biggest improvement to come btw now and January 1. From what I'm hearing as of this weekend, Ravern will not be redshirted and will contribute this year and I agree. At some point this season, it will click and he will wow the Bulldog faithful, Ravern's shot is a thing of beauty and he is too athletic at 6'7" and can shoot lights out not too contribute.

The talk about this team having some three point shooters is all true, we could possibly have 4 players on the floor capable of knocking down the longball with 4 more waiting on the bench for their turn. I didn't say much about Charles, but I very pleased to see Charles with 12 defensive rebounds and 90% from the free throw line. If this team can play defense and rebound up to Rick's standard's we should have a say in the SEC outcome this season. -Arliss

Open Scrimmage Report

Bulldog fans showed up today to get a glimpse of the baseketball bullies. This was a great opportunity for everyone to see the freshmen and if the returning lettermen have made improvement. The three players that stood were Phil Turner, Riley Benock, and Kodi Augustus. All three should see the floor this season with Phil possibly being the first option off the bench. Kodi is a spark plug and has a soft touch on his shot. Kodi doesn't let the game come to him, he meets it head on. Jamont's jump shot shows improvement, his windup is the same but his release is much quicker. If the lane was open he exploited it. Phil is high energy player and a very form able point guard. Riley Benock still seems alittle gun shy, but is deadly out on the arc. Ben has evolved from a spot up shooter, to shooting more off the dribble. He gets rids of the ball much quicker than last season. Ben is much more aggressive driving to the basket. Elgin showed glimpses of his offensive skills, and can back anyone down and has a nice reverse layup move. Ravern hit some shots, and his defensive skills are improving day by day. Charles made some nice shots and played some nice defense. Brian had some nice putbacks, but I was very impressed with Varnardo on the offensive boards and putbacks. I was very impressed with Phil's vocal leadership and he did not back down from Jamont. Phil will push the ball down the court aggressively. The freshmen are learning to play defense. Barry ran some point in the second game and did well. Overall, it was a very encouraging scrimmage, we'll see how the freshmen play come game time, but look for Phil and Kodi to continue separate themselves if they continue on their current pace. All freshmen will play and all will be needed to help provide depth with the SEC evolveing in an up tempo style offensive league. Look for better measuring stick over the next two exhibition games.

I think things turned out for the best, of course they wouldn't have been able to call all those fouls on Jamont against Lofton in Knoxville last season. So, thanks to Peterson and Coach Pearl.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 2/2 Tennessee

In my opinion this is the matchup between the two best teams in the SEC. This is obviously the UF game of last year. The volunteers have the most talent in the SEC and the media polls reflect that. The first thing to comes to mind when I start thinking of the matchup is depth, depth, depth. MSU will playing on adrenaline from the crowd through the end of the first half. The question do we have the athletes to match their tempo into the 2nd half. As if TN wasn't strong enough last season they have a boat load of transfers available to play this year. On the front line Duke Crews has been suspended and his future is unknown at this point. With Crews status up in the air Wayne Chism returns and transfer Tyler Smith. Smith's instant transfer could wind up having as big of an impact to his team as Roberts did when he received clearance to play. Smith can drive it to the hoop at 6'7" 215 or pull up and hit a jumper and is described as a power point. The learning curve for our 3's and 4's need to be in the rear view mirror or Smith could have a big night. 6'7" Arizona transfer J. P. Prince can play 1-4 will give teams fits with his versatility. If you don't know much about TN's backcourt , I don't think you watch alot of college basketball. Let's hope the refs won't being wearing orange when Chris Lofton drives the lane at Humphrey Coliseum this season. We couldn't breath on him the last 5 minutes of game with getting called for a foul last season. The question is, who is going to step up in get in his face this season. I look for the duties to rotate on and off as the game dictates but really look for Phil or Barry to show their defensive prowess in this game. But the task could be Jamont's with Lofton expected to handle the ball this year. Ramar Smith should run the point and is one of the bigger point guards at 6'2" & 205 lbs. The best way the beat TN is to keep our guys fresh with substitutions, play transition defense and match them step for step offensively. One interesting note, we know Jamont can start a fast break. Even though Elgin is beginning to learn the system, word is he can start a fast break better than any big man we've had on campus. If he's substituting by this point in the season, those skills could come in handy. There shouldn't be a seat left in the house for this one as the Bulldogs will lay it all on floor for this one, if at all possible don't miss this one, it could be one for the ages.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Wednesday 1/30 @ Arkansas & Saturday 2/16 @ Hump

Well, if there is ever a team that will be able to see if we have improved in the post this is it. This should be our toughest opponent for the west this season. We will have the size to matchup this season. It was clear in the SEC tournament that without a days rest in btw games, Dietric could only do so much. Our depth in the post will determine the outcome of the game. Beverly and Stewart were the 2 best freshmen in the league last year. We'll see how Beverly performs now that he is a known commodity. This season we can throw Johnson and Bailey at Steven Hill to allow the lane to open up for Charles and Jamont. This team goes as Erwin goes. If we can get in his head the rest of the team has struggled in past games. The pigs will press and run under Pelphrey and they have team dominated with upperclassmen who are up to the task. This will be our 3rd SEC road game. If we can win @ LSU & Bama, and then win this game@ Arkansas on the 30th, we might just have a return of the Road Warriors.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 1/26 & Wednesday 2/20 @ Ole Miss

Well, there is no doubt that Coach Kennedy is making some improvements in Oxford. The senior dominated backcourt is gone, but Curtis and Parnell will anchor an experienced frontcourt. Kennedy will have lots of new faces on the court this season with his recruits, transfers and juco players. The rebels will try to play a fast paced game, but we will have to wait and see if they have the horses to run the offense Kennedy has envisioned. Food for thought, even though Dwayne Curtis is top returning scorer, does he keep Kennedy from running his style of offense? No doubt they will give some teams fits upfront but will that make up for the lack of experience in the back court. They will be young and lacking in experience, and will take their lumps this season, but could surprise a team or too.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 1/19 @Alabama & Wednesday 2/6 @ Hump

Mark Gottfried has been quoted as saying "As Steele goes, Bama goes." With Steele taking a redshirt lets hope that's the case b/c they have still have some shooters and Hendrix is a load down inside. Bama shouldn't be the media darling as it was last season. I think Bama will be as good as the players who step up to replace Steele. They are a load down low and their guards will have to camp out around the perimeter and knock down some threes to compete this season. Riley was the only consistent shooter at the Hump last season and they could rely heavily on him again. They will miss Davidson, but will look for soph. Yamene Coleman to step up this season. We could see bama play with a smaller lineup as MSU has the last 2 seasons, if you can call it that with Gee playing on the wing. AL is a team we need to sweep to compete this season. We blew them out in the Hump and Steele stole our thunder in T-Town last year. If our 2's and 3's can shoot the ball we should take care of business with bama. If Bama struggles this season, look for bama fans to turn the heat up on Gottfried.

New Walk On Roderick Bryant

The MSU basketball saw a new face on Saturday with the addition of Roderick Bryant. Since the departure of John Harris the Dogs have been in need for someone to help the team practice. He caught the eyes of coaches in scrimmages at the Sanderson Center and was asked to tryout. He worked out with the team last week and has now joined the team. He is from Birmingham and is 6 ft and 175 lbs. He looks to make and impact by helping the team in in practices and scrimmages. Look for Roderick to be rewarded this season with the many blowouts in the Dogs' future. Good luck Mr. Bryant and welcome to the team.

Basketball Press Conference

Coach Rick Stansbury held his annual preseason media gathering today. Here are some of the highlights of how Coach Stansbury feels about the upcoming season and players from the press conference:

• This team is young but experienced
• We have to find depth off the bench from our freshmen
• Phil Turner - biggest change for Phil growing up mentally, he is a great passer, he has made the adjustments and is one of the team's most athletic shooters
• Ben, Barry, Jarvis - all 3 have to play at a higher level mentally & physically
• Don't be surprised if Barry plays some point guard this season and look for him to be the 3rd scoring option, last season he was piece, now he has to be a big part
• Jamont - you have to let Jamont do the things that he does well
• We have 3 freshmen who can shoot the ball
• We have to get better and defending and rebounding the ball
• Expectations for Charles - play with more consistently- energy wise - improve in the effort category
• On Schedule - we find out how good we are early.
• Kodi Augustus- Coach has as much confidence in him as any shooter on the floor. When he has the ball he will have the green light to shoot it.
• Ravern - needs strength, Ravern gets exposed out on the wing, needs to make adjustments
• Brian - needs to get confidence back in his knee
• Toughest guy this year - Jamont, others Ben and Barry
• Elgin - he is physically and mentally tough, just doesn't understand the game yet, likes his potential
• Benock -biggest surprise shooting the 3, you don't want to leave him open, coach loves where he is going.
• Open Scrimmage set for 4 PM

Alot of the things Rick talked about were things we have heard before but the two best points had to be that we shouldn't be surprised if Barry plays the PG and that he has the most confidence in Kodi's shooting overall for the team. - Arliss

Will there be enough shots to go around?

As one might say, its a good problem to have. That might be the case this season with nine, that's right nine shooters this year. That is nine players who have the ability put the ball in the hoop. Will there be enough shots to go around? Before you answer that question lets look at what we have returning. The team took 2,071 shots last season. Jamont took 20.9% of our shots last year, personally I would like to see this drop off alittle bit to around 18% and see Jamont improve his assists of 187 of last season to around 250 +this season. That would put him around 8-9 per game average for assists. Charles took 15.7 % of the shots, I think that is just about right, lets just get those rebounding numbers up Charles! Barry accounted for 11.6% and I think most agree that this number needs to increase to around 18% this season. Ben shot 8.5% of the shots and you should see this number grow to around 12% this season. Last but not least is Mr. Varnado, he only accounted for 5.6% of our total shots taken and was a eye opening 65% from the field. His shots need to increase to around 10% of the offense. I think Jarvis showed us the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his offensive skills. So if that accounts for 74% of the shots taken this season. You have to feel that 26% to spread across 4 primary players. Mop up time will account for about 1% so were left with a nice round number of 25%. You have to feel that out of Kodi, Ravern, and Phil, two will get about 5% and one is going to step up contribute in the 8% range. That leaves 7% for Elgin, Brian, and Benock. But Benock is showing signs that he doesn't plan on keeping the bench warm this season. Its the remaining 25% of the shots and how they get spread out that could make a difference this season. Well, if I have to punch the shift 5 keys for the percentage sign one more time, I might be sick. Once again, it could be a problem, but its a nice one to have. I think one of the most exciting things to come is to see who steps up and claims there share of that 25%. But, I think that it is extremely important for Jarvis's and Barry's numbers go up. Like I've said before, when Jamont drives the lane and draws the double team, he will have an array of shooters camping out on the arc licking their chops waiting to get Jamont closer to that total of 250 assists for the year. It will be fun to watch it all unfold. Go Dawgs!!

Closed Scrimmage Report from 001

Notes from Saturday's Scrimmage

Although I wasn’t able to attend the scrimmage this morning due to a medical problem, I was able to get some highlights from the scrimmage from someone that was there. I think Coach Stansbury is happy with the progress the team has made over the last week since practice started. In a previous column I told you that Coach thought defense and rebounding could win games and then I added that some offense was also needed. That came out in the scrimmage today. The shooters were lighting up the place. We still need a bunch of work on defense, but the offense shown today can carry this team a long, long way. Three standout things occurred today. Coach has probably now identified our back up point guard and it ain’t who we suspected it to be. I think we all were fairly certain the back up would be Ben Hansbrough. If you were in that camp, you (and me) were wrong. Phil Turner has garnered that position. Secondly, Phil was on fire from behind the 3 point line. And thirdly, our new secret weapon has turned out to be none other than Riley Benock. He showed today how adept he is at playing the game and like Phil, he hit 5 of 6 from behind the line. When these kids can make 50-60 points in 20 minute halves in a scrimmage, just think what they can do later. If they can make the same progress over the next week that they made the previous week, we’ll see a heck of a scrimmage on the 27th. And speaking of that scrimmage, look for that scrimmage time to either be 3 to 3:30 in the afternoon, or 6:30 to 7 in the evening. More to follow.

Romero Osby Part II

Breaking Down the Schedule - Kentucky Wildcats

I hope Scotty Hopson can attend this game, because after this game any doubts that are left will be no more. This game will introduce a new era in SEC basketball where the kittycats will rule the SEC no more. For the past two seasons, it seems like there was only one man that could stop Jamont and that was Randolf Morris. Thankfully he's gone and KY will struggle in this area. The kittens will depend heavily on newcomers, especially Patrick Patterson one of the top HS frontcourt players in the nations last season. The only frontcourt player with any type of experience is 6'9" 190 lb Perry Stevenson. He is the size Jarvis was when he first arrived on campus but doesn't have the offensive skills Jarvis does. Our depth should exploit Stevenson down low and leave an interesting matchup btw Patterson and Charles. Charles experience should give him the upper hand, but Patterson's athleticism should match up well. The backcourt will be KY's strength. If billy boy wants to teach his guards something, he need to start with learning how to distribute the ball. KY found this out the hard way in the SEC tournament. If we can dominate up front if should offset any weaknesses in the backcourt. Like some other teams in the SEC, KY could be forced to play with a guard dominated lineup. Without the horses down low, KY will have some weaknesses and look for MSU to exploit those. This will be a barn burner. Next, the TN game will be one the biggest games in the Hump this season. My love for the wildcats hasn't grown much through the whole Scotty Hopson recruitment and I look forward to sharing the same feelings for KY that I've have for the Alabama basketball program for several years now.

Spread the Word

It has been reported that MSU is getting serious about building some practice facilities. From what I've gathered, everything is pointing in the direction of this idea turning into bricks and mortar in 08. Earlier in the week I threw out an idea to some of those whose have influence in these decisions. It was to build a museum/hall of fame along with the new practice facilities. The ideas are endless. Most of our trophies and the hall of fame are in the Hump and when fans and prospective students visit campus, how many actually visit the hump to see them. From my experience since I left MSU, some of the destinations to visit on campus are the Sanderson Center, the Chapel of Memories and now the Cullis Wade Depot. Why not have a museum/hall of fame along with new practice facilities. We could have everything from the famous bulldog team that left in the cover of darkness to play in the NCAA tournament to current SEC tournament and season trophies. Not to mention this could be a great fundraising tool, b/c I'm hear to tell ya, it doesn't look that the talent level at MSU will be dropping off anytime soon. Now I write this to ask everyone who reads this page to spread the word and call the Bulldog Club and talk to anyone who will listen or email Doc. Anything to plant the seed. If you like the idea I hope you'll tell someone else and maybe if we all voice our support it can be done.

001 Reports

Basketball Practice Report

Hope all enjoy this report as much as I did in the preparation of it. Practices are going great. But before I get into that I need for you to understand the dedication these young men have to the program and what is expected of them. They started last Friday evening with their first practice and since them have been doing 2 a days Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Coach gave them a day off today, but starting tomorrow they go back on 2 a days until they have the open scrimmage everyone is invited to. These young guys get up at 5AM, get whatever they need for classes then get to the Hump, change into practice gear and on the floor ready to start the work out when the horn goes off at 6AM. The morning work out ends at 7:15AM and then they have to eat breakfast before classes. They are expected to make all classes and be there on time. They then have to be back at the Hump for evening practice which starts at 3:30PM and some of these last for 2 to 3 hours. Other than this, each player has to go for one hour of lifting and conditioning twice a week. That should give you and idea of what their day is like. Now for the practice notes. As we have discussed before, what the staff is now trying to accomplish is toughening them up so they can run the floor and defend. In some cases with the “freshmens”, I don’t think they have ever had to play defense. If we started the season tomorrow, we would only have one player off the bench, Brian Johnson, or maybe also Phil Turner that the staff could be happy with in a game. But man can they shoot the basketball. This offense will be as good as you have ever seen in an MSU team. But the coaches are beginning to teach them defense. It is just going to be a time consuming thing on the coach’s part. If Ravern has ever played defense in his life, it sure hasn’t shown yet. But did I say they can shoot the basketball. The way Stans has them running the court; they will toughen up fast enough. At the rate they are going, you will see some pretty good basketball when they have the open scrimmage on the 27th. I plan to try and sneak back in a couple of times between now and then to keep you updated. I will give you more information on the progress of individual players in my next report.. ‘Til next time, “GO DAWGS!”

Breaking Down The Schedule - Saturday 1/12 Georgia

Last season we did not play well in Athens. The Bulldogs return Mike Mercer who was lost to a knee injury last season and was a difference maker on this team. Mercer is back and he joins Sundiata Gains in the back court which should be the strength of this Georgia team. Georgia has a deep front court with size, but no one has stepped up and become a star yet. Georgia was averaging 90 pts per game before mercer went down so look for much of the same this year. This is Felton's fifth season, so the pressure is on for an NCAA bid. The Georgia fans will look for production after the completion of a 30 million dollar practice facility that will house practice facilities and coaches offices. The lack of experience up front should be exploited by MSU, but look for this this game to be a chance to see how our guards match up with their athletic back court. If we can defend their guards we should be OK, but Georgia is a team that can get hot at times. I give MSU the nod because our perimeter defensive depth on the perimeter will be improved by the time we play the puppies.

Breaking Down The Schedule - Wednesday 1/09 @ LSU & Sat 3/08 @ Hump

The first thing that stands out to about this game is that we open and close the season with the bayou bengals. The star of the team this season could be incoming McDonald's AA Anthony Randolf. Randolf is 6'10 and can play inside and out. He is a legitimate one and done. The tiger's strength will be in the back court with Tasmin Mitchell and Garret Temple. The tigers have had the luxury dating back to Stromile Swift of a strong front court, but could struggle this season. Unlike years past if you want to beat the tigers, you better have some 2 &3 guys who can defend, not the 4 & 5 guys. Look for John Brady to play a smaller lineup like MSU has been forced to the last two seasons. They could struggle b/c the biggest reason we were able to get away with in the SEC and alot of teams have not, we had a Diectric Slater. One of the keys to MSU winning a west title was sweepin LSU and the dogs will need to do no less. Enjoy football LSU, b/c you could be in for a bumpy ride this season.

Where are we really at now? Part 2

There has been a lot of speculation by fans about this year’s basketball team and especially about the incoming “freshmens.” I ask in an earlier report for everyone to temper their expectations for this coming season, but it is very, very hard to do. Why? Because we have extremely good talent on this team. I have a hard time doing this myself. I suppose that is because I listen more to my heart than my head. This will be a very young team with just starting one senior and one junior. All the rest are sophomores and freshmen. The coaching staff knows what the offensive skills of all these kids are. What they don’t know is, will it transfer over into games. The chief suspect of this team will be the defense of the freshmen class. We have already seen what the starters (Gordon, Harnsbrough, Stewart, Rhodes and Varnado) can do. So starting Friday, Stans and his staff will start teaching defense. It is imperative that this young bunch of players start getting acclimated to college ball and get toughened up enough to contribute. Stans has already talked repeatedly about how the team has done all of the right things during the off season both on the court and off the court. Every player has gained at least 5# and that’s all muscle. Coach is very, very high on this team. He says they have the best chemistry of any team he has coached. So how does the staff get them ready other than in practice? I think in the first two exhibition games we’ll get to see a lot of substitution, maybe even as many as four at a time. The only position on this team that is solid is Gordon at PG. But Stans always starts his most senior and experienced players in games. So how do you toughen up the new guys for the season. Everyone tries to put a label on each of the players such as Gordon at the 1 and Ben at the 2 and so on. I really don’t look at it that way. We have post players and we have perimeter players. To a large degree, the post players are interchangeable and so are the perimeter players. We have the talent now to go a long way. All we need is for the new players to get playing time to toughen up to the college level of ball. I think when the regular season gets underway we will see the freshmen go in for 2 to 3 minutes at a time to give the starters a breather. As the season goes on the players that perform in practice and on the court will see increased playing time. In this manner, when we get to the SEC portion of the schedule and beyond, we’ll be able to go 9 or 10 deep in each game. Two of the biggest pleasant surprises for the staff and well kept secrets are Augustus and Benock. Kodi has a lot of maturity and basketball IQ because of his playing prep ball and he can shoot. Hardly anyone on this team can stop him on the perimeter. And then there is Riley Benock. He wasn’t highly recruited and had committed to William & Mary as a PG. That is, until Stans came calling. Coach told me sometime back he knew Riley’s DNA. They both played at the same high school in Kentucky and Stans knows the family. The surprise to the staff is how well Riley can shoot off the dribble and his pull up jumper and his outside shooting. He most probably is the best pure shooter on this team. Outside of these surprises, we have Bailey who can play inside, take down a rebound and start a fast break with the best of the big men in college basketball. And Raven loves to shoot the ball and can do so from just about anywhere on the court. And last but not least is Brian Johnson. Brian is a leader, pure and simple, and can back it up on the court. So with these new additions, we should once again be the leading rebounding team in the conference. As you all know, Stans feels we can win every game with defense and rebounding. But I think somewhere along the line we also have to play a little offense. We now have all of the pieces in place. Can we get the job done? I think so, and forget my remark about tempering expectations. I can’t!! GO DAWGS!!

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 1/05 Lafayette College

The first thing I had to do is google Lafayette College to figure out just where they are located. They hail from Easton Pennsylvania. They were founded in 1826 and have an enrollment of 2381. The Leopards hail from the Patriot Conference and finished 8th in the conference with a record of 9-21. They return all five starters, they shoot the 3 well, but it will take much more than that to compete with the Bulldogs. Look for Charles to have his season high in front of the home crowd. Don't forget to vote on the poll for starting time for tipoff.

I would like to pose two questions to the board.
1. Does this mean that any talks of the expanding the hump are dead in the water?
2. With the timing of admin. changes in the athletic department will this actually come to fruition?

A great idea if it can happen, lets give everyone a specific earmarked fund to contribute to and I say we can raise the funds on the heels of a successful season. Kyle thinks it will cost in the neighborhood of 16-30 million based on facilities recently built around the SEC. Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 12/29 Missouri

This is one game Ben Hansbrough and I are both looking forward to. Do you remember the name Stefon Hannah? Anyone who isn't a freshmen will, Hannah had a career game last year with 27 pts and 5 steals. This is a team that will run a Mike Anderson's 40 minutes of hell basketball. They return 4 starters from a team that started hot but had troubles with consistency. Hannah is the master of harassment but had his own troubles with holding onto the ball. Ben held his own, but Jamont was bothered at times by Hannah. This will be the first of the top two high tempo teams in the nation we will play this season. This is a team which under Mike Anderson will only get better. Last season we caught them on a good night. If our guards can hold their own and we can run up and down the floor I like our chances against Mizzo. They are a bit thin in the post, but can excel in the back court and have some serious 3 point threats. Our offense is at its best when the crowd gets behind us at the Hump. I like our chances and I think we take down the kittens.

Let’s take an inside look at this year’s Basketball team!

Like the Coach, I am a die hard optimist when it comes to our basketball team. I asked you previously to temper your expectations about this team, but even I have a hard time doing just that. I’m sure as the season goes forward, we may lose some games that we expect to win, but as some say, “that’s basketball.” I can tell you this; Coach is really high on this group of players. As he said, “they have done everything right this summer, in training and conditioning. They have done everything right on and off the court. And they have the best chemistry of any team that I have coached.” So, let’s start with the knowns: We all saw how the team came together in the latter part of last year’s season by winning the West Division Championship (co) and then the run they made in the NIT with the short bench. This year is different. We can actually develop the younger players to the point that we will probably be able to go 9 or 10 deep later in the season. How did we get here? We have a great nucleus from the returning players. We have all seen how well Jamont, Ben, Barry, Charles and Jarvis can play. Then we add in to this mix the new guys, Brian, Kodi, Ravern, Elgin and Riley. These guys have been scrimmaging together this summer and into this fall semester. Because all of this scrimmaging means they have been practicing their offensive skills. The defense will start on their first official practice. That is what the coaches can teach. Offensive skills come with the players. What defense they use in practice has been what they learned in high school except for the experienced players. Surprise, surprise, we actually have 7; count them 7 shooters on this year’s team. From the perimeter we have Jamont, Ben,Barry, Kodi, Ravern, Phil, and Riley. And believe it or not, Riley is probably our best pure shooter. He has just not gotten the media attention that the others have gotten. On an individual basis, some of the players we need watch are: Kodi who has shown remarkable skills of shooting over just about anyone that has tried to defend him on the perimeter, Ravern has shown that he can shoot from anywhere on the floor, Phil can dribble his way into an open shot, and Riley can hit the downtown bomb. With the post players, Charles, Jarvis, Brian, and Elgin , I think we once again will see our Dawgs take the rebounding lead, totally and offensively in the SEC this year. There has been a lot of internet talk about Charles and his consistency of play. After tip toeing in the NBA draft this past year, he now knows what he has to do to insure he’s drafted next year. Can he do it? No one but Charles knows the answer to that. If he falters though, we have a bench replacement ready to step in. When you put all of this together, on paper and in my mind, we have all the right ingredients for a championship team. We have the offense, rebounding and hopefully the defense to insure a long, long season. Go Dawgs!!! -001

Breaking Down the Schedule - Friday 12/21 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

The Islanders came on strong at the end of the season and blew a 17 point lead to Wisconsin in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. We handled the islanders easily at the Hump last season 96-72. I remember this game in particular b/c this had to be Ben's best game of the season. He had 23pts, 8 assists, 0 turnovers 3 steals and was blazing behind the arc where he was 5-6. The only thing going against MSU for this game will be that Dogs will be coming off a trip to Los Angeles only 2 days earlier and they will be away from the Hump. The islanders return a player in preseason Southland Conference Player of the Year Chris Daniels. Daniels is 7-0 265 and can bang with the big boys and is a legitimate NBA prospect. This will be a great opportunity for Jarvis to show off his improved interior skills and get ready for SEC play. The islanders have a new coach in Perry Clark after Ronnie Arrow took the job at USA. The dogs didn't have any trouble last season with the beachbumbs, and don't see that changing any time soon.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Wednesday 12/19 Loyola Marymount

This will begin a road trip for Dogs in which they will log some serious miles. The lions return 2 players from a team that went 13-18 last season. Loyola big white boys were just outmatched by our more athletic front court. All of the kittens front court is gone. Don't look for the bulldogs to wait to long before putting the game away in Los Angeles California before heading halfway back across the nation to Corpus Christi TX for a showdown with the Islanders. The bulldogs should win in style and see some sights in sunny California.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 12/15 South Alabama

The Jaguars lose coach John Pelphrey, but gain a name that MSU is familiar with. Coach Ronnie Arrow comes from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The jags return 4 starters from a team that went 20-12, won the Sun Belt regular season title and lost in the first round of the NIT. Guard Demetrick Bennet is on most preseason sunbelt conference team and returns a productive 15.5 ppg. MSU put a beatdown on USA 84-46 and I don't see anything changing anytime soon.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Thursday 12/13 Miami

I'll never forget the Miami game of last season, its when we were introduced to Barry Stewart. Miami lost 20 games last season but have two good players in Jack McClinton who led the ACC in made 3 pointers last season and big man soph. Dwayne Collins. Collins is aggressive under the rim and can hold his own. The hurricanes strength will be in the post, so look for our guards to shine in this ballgame but our post will be tested. MSU should not have a hard time with the water twisters before heading out on the road for two weeks.

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 12/10 Southeastern Louisiana

The Lions are out of the Southland Conference and lost 4 starters off a team that finished 17-15, 1st in the eastern division of the Southland Conference. Kevyn Green is the lone returning starter and he averaged 8.5 ppg and 3.5 rpg. Patrick Sullivan was a key reserve at 6'9" 205 and beyond that they are thin in the post. Look for the Bulldogs to frustrate and exploit the kittens at the Hump.

Agent 001 Reports - Reseating the Hump for 07-08

I sat down with one of the Asst. Athletic Directors in the Bulldog Club the first part of the week and discussed the reseating of the Hump for the up coming BB season. Any mistakes in this report are mine and not the BDC. So what are some of the pertinent points that came out of this meeting. They are not only reseating this year, but will do so again next year, and will continue to do so until they can formulate a viable plan to do it for multiple years. We have all heard about the new software they are using for ticket distribution. Right now, they are still using the old software for football ticket sales, but all basketball tickets have been entered with the new software. Consequently, this year’s tickets will be bar coded. As soon as the new software is fully operational, we will be able to use it for ticket exchange. Letters were scheduled to be mailed out to all BDC members and season tickets holders on Wednesday, October 3 that will give you your identification and pin number so you can go to the mstateathletic web site and manage your account. I was also told that the seating would handled again this year, the same as last year. You will be given the day and time for your ranking to choose your seats. They plan to post the Hump seating map on the web site and update it every few days so that you can see where you might be seated when it’s your time to choose. The new seating selection date is not set at this time, but will be sometime the middle of October. The Legacy section and the Faculty Staff sections will remain the same as last year and they will not reseat this year. -001

The court has as new look, what do you think?

I like the more defined maroon color, but "The Hump" logo is gone. Mississippi State is spelled on the court and not the sidelines. SEC has moved to the free throw line. I do like the color though. - Arliss

Breaking Down the Schedule - Saturday 12/1 Murry State Racers

After a tournament in California and Thanksgiving break, MSU will finally return to the friendly confounds of Humphrey Coliseum to take on the Racers of Murry State. The racers return 3 starters from a team that tied for second in the Ohio Valley Conference and finished 16-14 overall. They are led by Bruce Carter who had 12.1 ppg and 5.5 rpg. They led the league in defensive field goal percentage. Don't look for the racers to be pushovers, but provide good stiff competition to start off the month of December.

Will this year's freshmen have a bigger impact than last years?

IMO - It seems the closer we get to the season the more this class is getting hyped. I don't remember last year's class being this hyped. Ben, Barry, and Jarvis made a diffrence in the outcome of last season. I think the newcomers will have an impact, but not as big of a diffrence simply b/c of the players we have in place now. - Arliss

Greg Monroe Rumor

There was a rumor on one of the message boards yesterday about the consensus #1 high school player in the nation making an unofficial trip to MSU this weekend. Monroe has named MSU on his long list. I spoke with 001 and he said that it is just a rumor. The coaching staff stopped recruiting Monroe a year and half ago to concentrate on Hopson, Osby, and Bost. So this should put the nail in the coffin on any chances that Greg Monroe ever adorns the maroon and white. All three commits are still solid.

Breaking Down the Schedule - USC Anaheim Classic - Hold the Mayo Please

All the talk will be about O J Mayo, one of the most highly touted recruits in the last 10 years. This could be one of the best one on one point guard match ups all season long. This is a challenge Jamont will take to task. I can see Mayo giving Jamont some problems on the perimeter, but Jamont will eat his lunch in the post. The team lost its top 3 scores from a team that went 25-12 that was put out by North Carolina in the round of 16. They will have an athlete to match every one of our athletes. This is the kind of competition that will have the horses to make a run in March. We have to show we can match up with a high caliber team of this type to be a sweet 16 team. They match up well with our front court but the key will be the play of our guards. They have 3 guards who are 6-5 and weigh over two hundred pounds. This game is too early in the learning curve for our freshmen, the game will be won at the 2 and 3 spots. Look out in the front court, they are led by 6'11" RouSean Cromwell and 6'9" Taj Gibson. Gibson is very similar to Jarvis even though he will most likely cover Charles. This team is young, but loaded with talent. It is in our favor to play this team early. Mayo could still being going through his growing pains, wait maybe that's the pain in his chest after getting run over by a 230 lb linebacker trapped in point guard's body (Jamont Gordon). If this match up happens, look for a great one.
