Kyle Veazy of the Clarion Ledger is reporting that MSU's practice facilities may become a reality.
MSU TO FUND PRACTICE FACILITY
STARKVILLE - A practice facility for Mississippi State's basketball teams has taken a step closer to reality.

I would like to pose two questions to the board.
1. Does this mean that any talks of the expanding the hump are dead in the water?
2. With the timing of admin. changes in the athletic department will this actually come to fruition?
A great idea if it can happen, lets give everyone a specific earmarked fund to contribute to and I say we can raise the funds on the heels of a successful season. Kyle thinks it will cost in the neighborhood of 16-30 million based on facilities recently built around the SEC. You can also comment about it on Kyle's blog at:http://www.clarionledger.com/misc/blogs/kyleveazey/kyleveazeyblog.html

Good news, this would definitely help with recruiting. I think the Sanderson center is a big selling point for recruits; that place is top notch for a college rec center. You can ask any coach - recruiting success starts with facilities. If the board is as crazy about MSU basketball as we are money will NOT be an issue.

(1) I think expanding the Hump was a bad idea from day one. Upgrading, maybe, but not expanding.
(2) Yes, I think this will happen. Doc knows a successful sports program when he sees it, and he's going to do what it takes to continue winning.
I am very excited about this possibility...our players, and our coach, deserve it.
My concern is that we don't rush a less than first class facility. We're recruiting great and we'll continue to recruit great. If it takes an extra year raising funds, so be it. If a first class design in presented then people will step up.
I assume that Rick is going to be the front man for this campaign. Similar to the way Polk has built DNF over the years for baseball. Rick will need to make a lot of alumni gatherings in and out of state.
1- I have never thought expanding the Hump was a good idea; at least at this point. Until we start selling out the Hump on a regular basis we need to keep it as is.
2- We have got to a have a practice facility. I don't believe that we have choice. When a program like UM has a facility we can't afford not to build one. I imagine Coach Stansbury will make sure that message is put out to the people with money.

In a conversation with Rick a few months back, he said a new practice facility would cost a minimum of 12M and what he wanted would run 15 1/2M. As you all know, he is not in favor of a new or remodeled BB facility. Also, he hinted that he has a sizeable hunk of the necessary funds already promised.

Thanks Bob for the good info.
Any chance we can get sharks with laser beams at fleet price ? Just kidding, that statement always comes to mind when big figures are thrown around. ZD
HAH-le-lu-yah.
ha-le-lu-yah,
ha-le-lu-yah,
ha-LAY-lu-yah! etc.
Maybe "Big Damp" could help us out.
(Come on, retire the guy's number, for crying out loud).
i really dont think the Hump should be expanded. right now, there isnt a bad seat in the house...at least when compared to many college arenas ive had the pleasure of visiting.
if it is expanded, i really really hope that the view from all areas is taken into account. if it is expanded, it needs to go up and not out. the further out the seating is pushed, the less intimate the experience is and the views are worse. i love the fact that the fans are so close to the action right now.
also, while the arena is technically sold out, it is nowhere near fully utilized. and im sure if a couple thousand seats were added, they would probably be swiped up, but if butts arent in the seats, all that has happened is there are 2000 more empty seats.
we have a serious problem of not being able to fill the Hump up, even in conference games. heck, we werent even at capacity for the Florida game last year!
Kevin Costner may have taught us that if you build it, they will come, but im really not too convinced of that in this case. we may expand the Hump, but will more people really come? people dont even come as it is, so why would more suddenly come with more seats avail?
as for the practice facilities, gotta keep up with the Joneses. most of the programs in the SEC have excellent practice facilities. Stans seems to be doing OK shorthanded, but i imagine that he could do even better, or just keep doing the same but make it easier on him and the staff if there is a practice facility for recruiting.

and if you look up the costs of practice facilites that have been going up across the country recently, 12-15 million is nothing.
i really hope this isnt something that is skimped on.
