Basketball Press Conference

Coach Rick Stansbury held his annual preseason media gathering today. Here are some of the highlights of how Coach Stansbury feels about the upcoming season and players from the press conference:
  • This team is young but experienced
  • We have to find depth off the bench from our freshmen
  • Phil Turner - biggest change for Phil growing up mentally, he is a great passer, he has made the adjustments and is one of the team's most athletic shooters
  • Ben, Barry, Jarvis - all 3 have to play at a higher level mentally & physically
  • Don't be surprised if Barry plays some point guard this season and look for him to be the 3rd scoring option, last season he was piece, now he has to be a big part
  • Jamont - you have to let Jamont do the things that he does well
  • We have 3 freshmen who can shoot the ball
  • We have to get better and defending and rebounding the ball
  • Expectations for Charles - play with more consistently- energy wise - improve in the effort category
  • On Schedule - we find out how good we are early.
  • Kodi Augustus- Coach has as much confidence in him as any shooter on the floor. When he has the ball he will have the green light to shoot it.
  • Ravern - needs strength, Ravern gets exposed out on the wing, needs to make adjustments
  • Brian - needs to get confidence back in his knee
  • Toughest guy this year - Jamont, others Ben and Barry
  • Elgin - he is physically and mentally tough, just doesn't understand the game yet, likes his potential
  • Benock -biggest surprise shooting the 3, you don't want to leave him open, coach loves where he is going.
  • Open Scrimmage set for 4 PM
Alot of the things Rick talked about were things we have heard before but the two best points had to be that we shouldn't be surprised if Barry plays the PG and that he has the most confidence in Kodi's shooting overall for the team. - Arliss

I have high hopes for Elgin, but if he had not said Bailey was mentally tuff, it was sounding alittle too much like Goodridge. Seems to be a totally different player though, but could be a project, plus give him 4 yrs in the system not 2 and lets see what happens.

Good point...I get a very Goodridge-esque vibe from Elgin so far.

Let's give Elgin at least one season before we make any comparisons, I think Elgin's size will be and asset to team's depth in the post this season.

Cliff notes version of the press conference.

1) Work on defense and rebounding.

2) Develop the bench.

That's what I took from it. Rick is comfortable with his starters and the overall chemistry. The staff is working with the youngsters on thier defensive assignments and thier position on the court.

It seems like the season can't get here soon enough but the Coaches sure like the time to go slow so the can teach, teach, teach. ZD

Bailey doesnt seem anything like VG, at least not to me.
Goodridge has been my favorite player over the last two seasons based just off of potential. he never put it all together, but man that kid has size, length, and hops. he is as athletic as the come.
hopefully a year off and then playing in the A-10 will help his impact on the game.

but Bailey doesnt seem anything like Goodridge.
i think Bailey is coming into college with a more polished game. VG was like 21 when he came to MSU. lets wait till Bailey has a couple more years of experience and compare them at the same age before calling him a potential bust.

Bailey has the size, height, and game to play right now. he may be our 4th or 5th option in the paint this year, but that means he is behind Rhodes(senior, all sec 2nd team), B Johnson(huge HS recruit w/ age and experience), and Varnado(last season's #2 option).
we will need his play this year, but we really dont need him to be totally polished...at least not quite yet.

Goodridge's hype was based totally on his potential. heck, over the summer i read comments from a couple of east division NBA scouts that are still watching him. he has done literally nothing, but his potential is too much to ignore.
Bailey's HS play shows he has at least some basic grasp of how to play basketball.

yep, another long comment. i gotta limit these!!

Agree mstateglfr, I think Bailey will be a man under the basket in time, you can't ignore his numbers he put up in college.

High school that is not college, but hopefully in college in time.

i know that kodi was a major recruit, but what about phil? it was shocking reading your bit on the scrimmage. i had totally relegated from being an impact player, but he seems the opposite!

We have some nice freshmen, but Phil has a year in the system and look for him to be on of the first options off the bench.

Seems to me that Turner could shove his way into the starting lineup if he tried hard enough throughout the season.

I agree Turner could make it interesting. We could end up with 5 guards worthy of starter minutes this year. ZD

Turner is impressive. Can really help against teams like Missouri. Also, Barry Stewart's poise will be key against these type teams.

I see Bailey and Goodridge as being quite different.Goodridge did not start playing basketball until his teens, Bailey has played at least some since he was a kid.Goodridge was a great athlete, who really did not understand the game of basketball.Bailey is a good athlete who is much stronger physically than Vernon and plays a "strength" game.It SOUNDS like (I could be wrong of course) Bailey will be very helpful inside after he learns the system, which may take him most of the season to do.I think he will be taught a lot individually by the coaches and brought along slowly, but I expect him to be a "high impact" player before he leaves.
