when do you guys feel we will suffer our first loss of the basketball season??

more bell,

I'm thinking that it's going to be on our California trip. We will play 3 quality schools over 4 days and I think this is going to be the Dawgs' first big test. The team with the best conditioning will likely win the third game, so we've got a good shot, but there are two schools from that area playing and they'll be nearly 'home' games for them. I don't see State having a big crowd in Anaheim.

For whatever reason, I'm not worried about Clemson at all.

I could see us having some problems with Clemson, but I think Jamont's play will pull us through. The crowd will play a factor in the outcome of the game.

arliss,

I'm planning on being at the Clemson game and it is 100% guarantee that I'll be barely able to speak the next day, having shouted myself hoarse. =}

Its early and its a week night, but I'm hoping for 7500+ fans in the seats. 5000 is probally more realistic though. Let hope for a good turnout.

I cannot wait to see teams try to match up with our starting 5. I truly do not believe that a team with just one super star is going to have much of a chance against us due to the fact that we will be more balanced than we have been in recent years. Your thoughts.

Good vs GREAT

I believe this team has the natural ability to be good. Here are the 3 top things that could make us great.

#1- Jamont lives up to his "improved" billing and truly plays an elite brand of point guard.

#2- Jarvis Varnado becomes a household name by logging 30 minutes each game and more than doubling his point, rebound, and block shot numbers from a year ago.

#3- Phil Turner lives up to the scrimmage numbers in the fall and gives us a speed merchant/ energy player to compliment Gordon

*BONUS* --> Augustus gives us versatility on the wing, both offensively and defensively.

If most of that happens then we are in for a fun ride ! ZD

ha, ZD, Jarvis needs to stay out of foul trouble to log that many minutes.
and if he does, then WATCH OUT! he will be mentioned as one of the top big men in our conference.

trying to swat so many shots each game is great, but it can easily lead to too many fouls if the timing isnt perfect.

i have us losing the Sunday game out in Cali(assuming we win the first two in that tourney).
that would be the likely matchup against USC.
if we lose to SIU(the friday game), i think we would win the consolation game out there.

so either way, i figure we drop our first game out there.
that would put us at 5-1 on the year.
and then i have us as winning all the games up to the Bama game at Bama. man, that would mean we would be 16-2...which is a lot higher than i think is possible.

I agree with the previous poster, a loss in the finals in the Anaheim Tournament, and our first chance at a loss @ Alabama. Although...Bama did just lose their two star players, and that game is very winnable.

What are the chances that Kodi or Ravern will be our starting 3 at some point in the season, or will they even play that position this year?

Unknown said...

Anonymous, I believe the starting five is set for the year unless something very unexpected happens. If anyone breaks into the starting 5, it will be Phil Turner, but I really think he will be the sixth man all year. Ravern could be redshirted. He has a lot of experiencing to gain plus how to play defense. Kodi will see minutes spelling sir Charles.

"Although...Bama did just lose their two star players"

are you thinking of Auburn?
Bama lost Steele, but nobody else...

Bama lost Davidson who played the 5 for them last year

mstateglfr said...

oh, Davidson.
i was thinking of players that they unexpectedly lost.

The tall freshmen, Augustus and R. Johnson can be used on the perimeter. Talent, height/length, ect. They'll continue to improve. Stansbury indicated that these guys can and will play.

I believe Coach Stansbury has been quoted as saying that at this time he believes that we will need all of these guys at some point during the season, and that nobody will be redshirted.

It makes sense since we are only carrying 11 true scholarship players on the roster.

If we lose a game this season it might be at Arkansas, that will be a real challenge.

To me this year's "mystery man" ( a la Vernon Goodridge last year) is Brian Johnson.

I haven't heard a lot about his game.

Can anyone who has seen him play fill me in on what to expect?

I don't expect big things from Johnson right away from seeing him play. Just my opinion, he has a lot of refining to do.

In the open scrimmage, he was hindered by a badly bruised thigh. I think he will be a very good role player for this team. He will give us productive minutes this year.
