Player Progression Series Part 2 - Jamont Gordon

Jamont Gordon – What more can be said about this young man. We all saw how he came around towards the end of last season. He is the point guard. He has outstanding athleticism to go along with toughness. He has the size and strength to become one of the most outstanding point guards in the nation this year. He now doesn’t have to try and do it all himself. He demonstrated this towards the end of last season. His court vision has improved tremendously now that he is looking to pass off to other players. His assist to turnover ratio in the last 7 or 8 games last year ended up at 3 to 1 and we’ll see those numbers improve this coming season. His 3 point shooting last year was 37% and has gotten even better. He just needs to continue his development from last year and let more about letting the game come to him instead of trying to force the game. His free throw shooting was in the high 70’s last year and I think we’ll see that come in the 80’s this season. On defense, he has the size and strength to guard just about anyone. Probably his biggest attribute to this team is his versatility.

what is so amazing to me is that the area he needs to improve in most, his shooting, is the very thing that he was recruited as...a shooting guard.
now he has the ability to get to the basket at will and his FG% is high as a result, but i cant say ive ever really seen him pull up a few feet inside the 3line and shoot. hell, that has been pretty much lost in college basketball for awhile now.
Jamont's 3pt shooting improved greatly over his freshman year in both shot selection as well as accuracy. and those go hand in hand. the less bad/untimely shots he takes, the more often his shots will fall.
the guy is already special, and has a real opportunity to explode on the scene as a leading G in college ball. i am loving the fact that we are on ESPN and also so many regional games this year. exposure is necessary for this team.
the Thanksgiving week tournament will be his(and the rest of the team) first opportunity to show the nation that MSU is for real. playing against the likes of Southern Illinois and potentially USC on TV is just awesome. Jamont will have his hands full with both teams and itll be an early glimpse at what we can expect to see from him thru the rest of the season.

Sorry But I have to vent! On a totally unrelated subject, don't know where else to post, since basketball fans are the most knowledgeable anyway I'll do it here. But how did we go from the best mascot to the worst? Our Bully is absolutely awful, I know I'm not the only one that realizes this but I would think there would be an outcry to stop the madness. Our old Bully was awesome. Does anyone remember the days in the Hump of the "simply fabulous" Bully! There will never be a better mascot than that.

We must get him out of retirement. Whatever amount it takes. If Van Halen can get back together, Heh! In fact the timing would be just right. Diamond Dave and Bully.

Gordon helps make Mississippi State very compettive against Tennessee or any other team in the nation.

The old Bully outfit was so cool, and the one now looks terrible. Its embarrassing. Thats how I feel. Could we put it up for vote Arliss?

The one now might have looked good in the 1930s during the depression when everyone was skinny.

I thought this series was an insight on how each player has progressed, not what they "need" or "should" do?
