Player Progression Series Part 3 - Ben Hansbourgh

Ben Hansbrough He was an enjoyable player to watch last year. He shot in the 40% range on 3 pointers, drove the basket pretty well and rebounded quite well for a perimeter player. His primary position this year will be shooting guard and back up point guard. He experienced a little trouble last year finding his roll on the team. He was moved back and forth between the 1 and 2 position. Now that he has settled into his roll, he just needs to continue to get better at his short range jumpers. He shot something just over 40% from 3 point range last year. But he’s not tall enough to get the ball up against some of our opponents this coming year. However, his percentage should improve on the long range shots simply because he probably won’t be taking as many. One thing he needs to improve on is understanding the game better. His free throw shooting was good last year and will be again this year. One thing he does bring to the game, every game, is toughness, energy and competitiveness.

The only obvious weakness to Ben's game is his ineffectiveness against the drive. Other than that he is a hard nosed player that, IMO, plays up to his potential. He's got some shooting skill and his asst/ TO numbers were exceptional for a freshmens last year. I always thought he got the ball into the post a shade quicker than Jamont, handing out the clean assists that get people out of thier seats.

Dude is cagey. ZD

Hansbourgh and Stewart. Those two are going to lead the team in what I see as a great era for us.

At the 2, Hansbrough will be looked on to put up his share of shots. Output at the 2 is important, and Mississippi State is set to use both the 2 and the 3 as interchangable wing like spots, with guys like Barry Stewart, Ravern Johnson and Phil Turner also being in the mix. Defense at these wing spots is key. Jamont Gordon appears capable of helping out against the other teams wings, and 6-9 Kodi Augustus can help defend on the wings as well.

Ben was very impressive last year. he was always hustling and didnt seem to take a play off. he was more than willing to sacrifice his body for a loose ball, and though not the fastest or most athletic, he worked hard to compensate.
he has a very nice shot that is as dependable from beyond the arc as anyone else on the team. and the most impressive part of his game last year was when he began to drive the lane towards the end of the season. im not sure what sparked his sudden choice to drive, but it was quite nice to see. it added another threat to his game out at the perimeter. and by getting to the hoop more often, it translated into more free throw opportunities.

i really hope he picks up where he left off at the end of last year, where he was backing up the point and willing to do most anything on the perimeter to keep the offense moving and the defense together.

I know that I am in the minority, but, I'm much rather see Jamont on the wing and Ben at the point. It'll be interesting to see what what the starting 5 looks like as the season progresses. But, I think Hansbrough has to be in there somewhere. He is too tough, too aggressive and too good a shooter to play in a back up or 6th man role.

Hansbrough is an excellent point - I'd much rather see him at the 1 than the 2 or 3.
