The Classic

I'm for one glad the Classic is over and I'm ready to put it in the rear view mirror. We were exposed in several facets of the game this weekend. One is that we cannot win on talent alone and are not as disciplined on defense as we need to be. Charles had a nice game last night, but we need some players to step up off the bench. It was obvious that our team was not ready for this type of competition this early in the season. So, you need to vent your frustrations, post them here and lets move on. Lets put this one behind us bulldog fans. Lets start the season over again this Saturday with the racers and keep looking forward. Go Dawgs!

its gonna be hard to put this one behind us seeing as how these losses will rear their ugly heads come Selection Sunday.

as of now, we are not good. its really tough to say that, but we are not good. the drive is not there. the execution is not there, and the discipline is definately not there.
i hate seeing us play like this.

I was concerned about this game after we lost to SLI. It is obvious that we were put in this tournament to match Gordon v Mayo and we didn’t take care of our end of the bargain. You could tell the team was playing flat during the opening minutes and dug themselves a hole. To their credit they climbed out but could never build on the five point lead we got late.

Overall, I’m not ready to say the sky is falling but we have to develop some depth on this team.

That was ugly. Didn't look organized or well schooled and SIU and Miami(OH) provided stark contrasts in approach and philosophy.

We can't recruit ourselves out of "stupid." We have to teach and coach our way out of it. Seems like our starters have little more grasp of what to do than the FR and that's disheartening.

We need assistant upgrades more than a new practice facilities. More bang from the buck.

Whats with the lazy passes? We are to casual with the ball. Let them watch Hoosiers again. Snap those passes. Snap, snap.

I'm glad we didn't get USC. They dismantled So. Illinois, a little humble pie for them.

Ravern Johnson can eventually help. Needs playing time.

Phil Turner is coming along. Needs continued playing time.

Kodi Augustus can help in lots of places.

Giving the freshmen playing time is a big key to helping the team this season , and developing players for the future.

We don't seem able to put pressure on the opponents defense like they do on ours with ball movement and/or penetration. Slater penetrated well last year but no one does so this year, and ball movement is listless....Doxiedawg

This is my first time on this blog. I live in Austin, Texas, and have been hopeful that MSU, my alma mater, would be NCAA tournament worthy this year. I was so disappointed last night that I had to find a blog and complain. It looked like we have talent, but sorely lack either in conditioning, discipline or motivation. I hope Stansbury can jerk a knot in their tails or this is gonna be a long season.

Phil Turner doesn't need to be playing for us. He's shown nothing so far. Did anyone notice that on the follow-up tip-in that put Miami up by 2 with a minute to go, Varnado was challenging the shot, but Rhodes and Stewart were watching rather than blocking out and that guy jumped over the two of them to put it back? Simple fundamentals that could have turned the game! Barry and Ben can't defend like Richard and Reggie and it's killing us. We sorely miss their athleticism. And as always is the case, Stans is a phenomenal recruiter (I'd say Hopson is DEFINITELY a lost cause now), but he can't coach X's and O's. If Miami's coach would run the same offense with our players/talent, man would we be good. But instead, we just set screens, run around, and throw up a shot. When will Stans run an offense!?!?

Don't Division I college head basketball coaches make about $10,000 a week?

Five questions:

#1. What are we getting this season for our $10,000 a week?

You said "vent". OK. "I'll say what I REALLY think."

You want the "UNDILUTED truth". Here it is.

"I have been watching college basketball for 50 years and I have NEVER seen a more poorly coached basketball team than Mississippi State was in California."

They just run around and wave at guys on defense, except for post defense, in which they don't even WAVE at guys.

On offense, they just stand around and wait for Charles or Jamont to shoot, and then run away from under the goal so they won't have to worry about getting hit in the hands with a rebound.

Second question:

2. "Do they ever run what we used to call a "Play"?.

Their opponents sure as heck killed them on plays designed to get the ball inside. It looks like MSU coaches don't know how to get the ball inside, stop the ball from getting inside, defend the ball after it gets inside, or even don't know how to to teach their players how to run a basketball PLAY for Pete's sake!

There is no unity, no chemistry, no leadership and, worst of all, no HEART or DESIRE.

The Coach is laying back on the bench with his hands behind his head watching his team getting destroyed by teams with half his talent, and the players are following his so-called "lead" by acting as if the really don't give a dirt whether they play well or not. After getting humiliated on national TV by a team with half their talent and 3 times their coach, the coach talks about "the things we did well".

Are you kidding me?

As a 50 year Mississippi State basketball fan, frankly I was embarrased that we could put that poor of a product on the floor on national television.

Basically, the offense consists of 2 guys playing "Playground" basketball, and 3 other guys standing around watching them do it.

On the optimistic side, however, the team only has problems in 3 areas of the game: offense, defense, and transition!

The coaches of SIU and Miami of Ohio could have taken MSU's talent and beat their own squads by 15 points.

Coaches can now work with 4 players at a time over the Summer, my other 3 questions are these:

3. what did the MSU coaching staff DO over the Summer?

4. What have the MSU coaching staff been doing since October 12?

5. Does Mississippi State actually HAVE a basketball coach?

SoulDog,

That was priceless... and sadly true.

ok, were these last two teams just really bad or have the dogs improved? Do those of you with better access to game footage have a sense of what is going on? I am limited to Yahoo.
