Full Court Press 11/29/07

The ball is in your court, what do you have to say now.

Psalm 145:13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.

If Murry State watched the tape of our game last saturday, they'll give us a very tough game.

Half court trap Jamont and run the same type offensive scheme ran against us by ___________ (can't remember who it was right now) and they stand a good chance of beating us.

Do we not have a true point guard between Bennock, Augustus, R. Johnson, Stewart and Hansbrough?

Jamont on the point will not work this year.

Just posted this on Veazey's Blog. What do ya'll think we need to do to right the ship?

We better find a point guard. Our "Jamont-first" offense is not working.

These things need to be corrected:

1. Lack of a true point guard.
2. Jamont is playing out of position.
3. Johnson needs more playing time (possible as a starter with Jarvis, Rhodes, Jamont, Barry).
4. Our 3 point shooters are not getting good open looks at the basket (3's from the baseline are not a good option).
5. We rarely work our offense to the point that we get open looks from point blank range (except for the occasional break down in opponents D that allows for a dunk).
6. Guards must play under control when penetrating the lane, stop going airborne and forcing passes which end in turnovers/charges.
7. Stop lapsing into periodic coma's on D.

GET THE FRESHMEN INVOLVED AND FIND US A TRUE POINT GUARD!

The poorest basketball coaching job in America is being done so far this season at MSU.This team is terrible!

Jamont's play is not even on the top 25 list as to why we are struggling.

I'm not going to waste my time presenting an argument to a guy who thinks we should start Jarvis, Charles AND Brian Johnson. That is the most absurd plan ever. Words cannot truly describe how bad that idea is.

That being said i will say this...
Ben, Barry, and Charles are all guys we rely on and they have been inconsistant all year. Combine this with the fact that Phil has played poorly and no other guards off the bench look confident in what they are doing and you get poor results against good teams.

Hopefully our young team will adjust to playing with 2 bigs again and a couple of guys off the bench will improve enough to contribute in a positive way. If Charles plays with the effort and confidence he had against MiamiOH we will have a successful year.

RiverCityDawy,

Sorry I rubbed you wrong brother.

So... Jamont is playing well in your opinion?

RiverCityDawg,

I didn't ask you to present an argument... at least I don't think I did. I am pretty sure I asked for others to voice their opinions on how to right the ship... that's all.

As Jamont goes, so goes MSU. Its not his fault though. He's playing out of position. He is NOT a point guard. As a result, until that situation is fixed, we'll continue to rack up the turnovers and L's.

Johnson has looked very very good in limited playing time. Bottom line, I'd love to see him get more minutes; even if it means starting all three of them.

I know... words cannot truly describe how bad that idea is... right RivercityDawg?

I thought I remembered someone snapping at me on a previous post...

RiverCityDawg, you got a bit steamed at me after the SIU game when I suggested that the loss was directly attributable to a poor coaching job and Jamont's poor performance at the point.

I'm not suggesting that Jamont is anything other than a very very talented player... But, a point guard he is NOT. Can we agree to that?

"Do we not have a true point guard between Bennock, Augustus, R. Johnson, Stewart and Hansbrough?"
--none is a 'true' PG. Augustus is a 6'8 forward...so clearly he isnt a PG. R Johnson is a SG/SF.
Hansbrough seemed fine as a backup PG last season when he was at the helm, but it isnt his 'true' position.
Steward isnt a PG either.

"2. Jamont is playing out of position."
--yes, but he is our best scoring option, and as a PG, he has the ball in his hands to make a play on every posession. its the way it is.

"3. Johnson needs more playing time (possible as a starter with Jarvis, Rhodes, Jamont, Barry)."
--Brian Johnson? are you serious? that would mean our top 3 big men are all on the court at the same time. where would the depth come from then? the first big man off the bench would be Bailey! that is a horrible idea.

"4. Our 3 point shooters are not getting good open looks at the basket (3's from the baseline are not a good option)."
--ive seen all 6 games so far, and they are getting plenty of open shots from the corner, up top, and on the wings. they just arent knocking em down.

"5. We rarely work our offense to the point that we get open looks from point blank range (except for the occasional break down in opponents D that allows for a dunk)."
--i agree.

"6. Guards must play under control when penetrating the lane, stop going airborne and forcing passes which end in turnovers/charges."
--oh LORD do i agree!! i cant remember ever seeing us get called for so many charges this early in the season. we are just horrible at charging!! oh man does that irk me!!

"7. Stop lapsing into periodic coma's on D."
--agree. we arent switching off our men well on screens.

mstateglfr,

Thanks man. Good stuff.

I'm not saying that all three big men should play all the time. But, I think I'd like to see them all three on the court together at some point in the game. Sub in a much smaller quicker line up with 4 guards and Rhodes/Varnado/Johnson.

As was said so appropriately by the gentleman who has been watching MSU Hoops for 50 years, But, our problem is "offense, defense and transition."

You didn't rub me the wrong way and I'm not steamed...more amused than anything. It just strikes me as comical that someone would suggest that Brian Johnson, Jarvis, and Charles should ever be on the court at the same time especially as starters.

Sorry If i came across as mad or rude. Its just interesting to me that someone would suggest that Jamont playing PG is our biggest problem and also thinks that starting 3 power forwards is a good idea. Also, I dont recall snapping at anyone after the SIU game. In fact, I was away from a computer and celebrating an Egg Bowl victory after the SIU game.

I agree that Jamont is not a point guard in the traditional sense of a PG, but he is our best option. Jamont is a score first point guard. He has the best court vision on the team and he is the best penetrator and passer. I agree when he plays bad our team struggles, but you can say that about all teams that rely on one player so much. That's why I am calling for Ben and Barry to play with more consistently and Someone to help off the bench.

One last comment on this issue.
You don't want Jamont to play "out of position" at the point, yet you want Charles to play WAAAY out of position and take away his strengths by moving him away from the basket by playing the 3? I just don't see how that makes any sense at all.
