How do we measure improvement this Saturday?

When I did a little analysis on the stat sheets for the two exhibition games, I saw statistics that have to be turned around to measure positive improvement. Let’s start with rebounding. That’s what Coach says we have to improve on and I totally agree. In our game with Cumberlands, we only out rebounded them by 1 (46 to 45). A lot of this can be attributed to the fact that we played freshmen a lot in that game which was their first college experience. In the second game with OKC, we out rebounded them by 8 (46 to 38). That’s 92 to 83 for both games. For us to be successful, we have to have at least a 12 rebound margin.

We also have to work on the assist to turn over ratio. In our first game, we had 10 assist to 17 turnovers. In the second game, we improved 22 to 19 but that is really not good enough. We must get the ration down to a 2 to 1 ratio to really be successful. 32 assists to 36 turnovers in two games will end up costing games if not vastly improved.

And last and a pet peeve of mine is free throw shooting. We made 31 of 58 attempts. In close games if we’re not shooting around the 70% mark, it can cost a victory. I have personally seen these guys shoot free throws in practice and scrimmages and they are better than their performance in these two games. They have to bring that skill and confidence with them to the game.

We have to see the above mentioned improvements this Saturday. These guys have the skills and athleticism to get the job done. Let’s all be there to raise our voices and show our support. “GO DAWGS!!!” -001

Boy you hit some hot buttons here.

Rebounding. I watch a lot of our games on film in the offseason. Charles Rhodes is a chronic bird dog. The shot goes up and he forgets there's anyone else on the floor. Time after time after time. Varnado is much better but the physical part of rebounding is still a challenge... getting and holding position.

Turnovers, like rebounding. These are correctable problems although some times it takes the bench to teach individuals to block out and value the ball.

FT shooting, there's something in the water in Starkville.

The difference between average and great is in the details. You can't just make up for 20 turnovers by doing something else better. You eliminate them or it bites you in the butt at the worst time. ZD
